Imagine… how incredible it would be if you got a warm, welcoming smile when you entered the bank, grocery store, post office and airport.  People desire to feel sincerely welcomed but too often that just does not happen. Can you imagine what would happen if people came to your church and could sense the love and care from members?

Recently I facilitated a conversation with pastors. One of the comments that stands out in my mind is this, ” the church is about relationships.” The pastor is right, we are a church of relationships.

When people come to the doorsteps of the church, they are not just looking for a friendly church but for friends. I am reminded of a conversation I had with a young man about 25 years old. He was helping me get my luggage out of a hotel when I asked him, what he would tell me to tell church folks who are looking to attract him. He smiled and said, “tell them to find common ground.” I now know he was simply saying, if churches could find ways to build relationships with him, he would be attracted.

Creating new relationships means being open to welcoming strangers in our midst. It also means being open to the changes that may be required to meet the need of newcomers.

Now imagine how wonderful it would be if people were greeted with a sincere smile and “good morning” when persons entered the church.  Today more than ever people are looking for something they can’t buy at stores or even at a restaurant. Finding a place where they are safe, comfortable, loved with out condition and listened to may be the start of building a community of relationships.

As you prepare for the holiday services, think of ways you can prepare ushers, greeters and even members on building new relationships. Your list may look something like this:

  • Welcome everyone with a smile
  • Introduce yourself
  • Look for people who may share common ground (Similar career, hometown, family, etc.)
  • Listen deeply and actively for their needs
  • Strive to show your Christian love in everything you do.

It’s time to build new relationships!
