BMG Awesome Insight Newsletter
How will you lead in the next decade? Will volunteers at your church look for new ways to reach out? What will you do to energize and renew the spirits of long time members as well as younger leaders? Happy new year! The celebration of 2010 brings so much anticipation of where God may be leading us as we seek understanding of the vision. In most recent weeks, I have been facilitating discussions with church leaders who desire to grow. One comment that was shared in one of the meetings stayed with me,”What must we do to prepare to lead the next generation?” Wow, that question has kept me on fire as we seek understanding of how we prepare to be even more faithful to the Great Commission in 2010.
Are your leaders ready to influence volunteers for effective ministry? A definition shared in Ken Blanchard’s book, Lead Like Jesus states “leadership is a process of influence.” To take that thought further, one of my favorite pastors often states, “If you’re leading but no one is following, you’re simply taking a walk.” With that in mind, how can we shape plans for 2010 that prepare our leaders to move to the next level of ministry in serving, reaching out, welcoming and inviting?
Welcome to this issue of BMG Awesome Insight Newsletter. Whether you are already making plans for leading beyond the walls of the church or you simply want to hear “awesome” more, this issue shares a few tips to help you make plans to reach out and welcome strangers in our midst.
As we continue to seek ways to be even more faithful to the Great Commission, let’s take the time to think about the importance of how we lead and communicate so that volunteers as well as outsiders/strangers will see obvious signs of Christian love. I am so excited what God is doing in ministry. It is my prayer that leaders like you are energized and continue to be renewed to seek ways to effectively lead, reach out, invite and welcome new disciples. I urge you to share this issue of BMG Awesome Insight Newsletter for Church Leaders with a colleague in ministry. Encourage them to sign up for the newsletter at www.awesomeinsight.com.

How Some Ministry Teams May No Longer Be Effective
Is becoming a new leader at your church similar to jumping double dutch rope? Let me explain. Growing up in Richmond, my childhood friends and I often jumped with two ropes called double dutch. When trying to begin to jump, getting into the two ropes while they were constantly rotating was a challenge. In other words, you’re standing in front of the ropes wanting to jump but asking yourself, “When can I get in?” I wonder if there are people at your congregation, looking the same way to ministry leadership thinking, “When can I get in?”Is it difficult for newer members to lead existing ministries at your church? Do people rotate their roles or are some ministry teams led by the same people for too many years? If you’re wondering how some ministry teams end up more like a double dutch game, here are some signs of teams that may lose their ability to be as effective.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- Same chairperson stays in the lead role indefinitely. Ask yourself: What impact would new leadership have on this ministry? Some times selection of a new leader brings new energy, ideas, approaches and another way to respond to God’s call.
- No new people are ever a part of the team. Ask yourself: How will new people be received on this team? Creating a welcoming attitude toward new people can lift the energy of the team with new insight, interest and commitment.
- The agenda of events and activities are the same year after year. Ask yourself: Are we still relevant today? Some times the things put in place many years ago no longer address the needs of today’s community. Take a step away and re-think things.
- The scheduled meeting time is set when most working people cannot attend. Ask yourself: How can we schedule our meetings so that younger adults can take part? Scheduling a meeting at 10:00 am on Tuesday may work more for non-working, retired people. Being open to new dates and times for meeting may welcome even newcomers to a ministry.
Now take a look at the team you lead. How can you be even more effective? Join us in our Teleseminar series: Magnet Leaders starting February 9th!

It is something in the way they lead that makes it so easy to be a part of their team.
